War against Militants, others: Navy launches 39 boats

Lagos —In an apparent move to stamp out activities of militants and vandals in the Nigeria Delta region of the country, as well those in Arepo, Ogun and Ijegemo creeks in Lagos , the Nigerian Navy yesterday launched 39 boats that could access the creeks.
Out of the newly procured boats, 30 of them, Espenal boats, were constructed locally while nine others, Wave Rider/Arrow boats were acquired from Sri Lanka.
Speaking during the launch which held at the Nigerian Navy Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos, the Minister of Defence , Mr Mohammad Dan-Ali noted that the procurement of the boats would not have come at a better time than now ,
following the emerging security challenges in the country, especially in the Niger Delta region, which he said had great consequences on the polity.
Represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Danjuma Sheni, the minister said “These challenges have continued to demand a great deal of human and material resources to surmount, which in the light of dwindling revenue would be sustainable only with generous innovations and incorporation of home grown solutions”.
He commended the Navy for rising to the challenges, following its decision to look inward and contracted local ship vendors for the provision of platforms that would help in tackling the challenges.
He recalled that an earlier local construction of 30 Epenal boats which were used by the Navy to patrol the Niger Delta area, informed the decision to construct additional 50 boats, out of which 30 were launched yesterday , with the rest to be delivered soon.
