The Catalan giants and Los Blancos won their penultimate games respectively

- Atletico have dropped to third after a 2 – 1 loss to Levante

Barcelona have defeated Espanyol heavily to edge closer to the La Liga title. The Catalan giants defeated the Periquitos 5 – 0 to stay strong to win the Spanish top flight.

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 8th minute through a sensational freekick, as Barcelona settled in to the game very early and there was less action for the rest of the first half, as both teams went into the break with the hosts leading 1 – 0.

The Catalans knew how important the fixture was because they could lose the title if they drop points.

Luis Suarez netted just seven minutes into the second half and got another in the 62nd minute.

Rafinha and Neymar also got on the score-sheet, to complete the rout. It ended Barcelona 5 – 0 Espanyol.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid have dropped points and have now moved to third. Diego Simeone’s men were defeated by Levante 2 – 1. Fernando Torres opened the scoring in the second minute of the game.

Levante equalised in the 31st minute through Victor Casadesus. Giuseppe Rossi scored the late winner on the stroke of 90mins.

However, Real Madrid have moved into the second position. A brace by Cristiano Ronaldo and a strike from Benzema helped Los Blancos to a 3 – 2 win over Valencia at the Bernabau to keep tabs with Barcelona.

The 2015/2016 La Liga season will be decided on the last day as Barcelona who are on top with 88 points play away to Granada who are battling to survive relegation.

Second placed Real Madrid on 87 points will square-up against 13th placed Deportivo la Coruna while Atletico Madrid will play host to Celta Vigo.
