Justice For Hajara: Teacher arrested and released after raping 6-month-old baby and rupturing her intestines in Yobe State

A 40-year-old deaf teacher was arrested on September 1, for raping a 6-month-old baby in Yobe State. According to reports which trended on twitter under the hashtag #JusticeForHajara, the culprit admitted to his crime and is out on bail.

The Commandant of Nigeria Security and Defence Corps (NSCDC), Muhammad Gidado Fari, revealed that the teacher, identified as Shaaibu Yakubu Abdullahi, was arrested by men of the NSCDC for allegedly raping the baby in the Potiskum area of Yobe state.
The NSCDC commandant revealed that the deaf teacher allegedly connived with his 10-year-old student, who carried the baby to him from her neighbour’s house and he defiled her, adding that although Abdullahi denied the allegation, he was identified by the 10-year-old student in a group picture of staff and student taken in the school.

Yari said the suspected rapist was arrested after a non-governmental organization, National Council of Women Society (NCWS), reported the situation to the corps, added that the matter has been reported to the state’s Ministry of Justice for prosecution as the case needs a professional in sign language to interpret.

The President of NCWS, Halima Kyari Joda, said the baby was taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for examination and proper treatment.
